Professor Patrick Mitchell is a Consultant Respiratory and General Internal Medicine Physician and Professor of Clinical Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. A graduate of University College Dublin (UCD), he completed specialist training in respiratory and internal medicine in Ireland before pursuing a prestigious clinical and research fellowship at McMaster University, Canada.

During his time at McMaster, Professor Mitchell conducted translational research on airway inflammation in asthma, culminating in the award of a Medical Doctorate (MD) by thesis. He was subsequently appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary, where he also served as Director of the Southern Alberta Asthma and COPD Program.

His clinical and academic interests span the management of complex airways and interstitial lung diseases, including severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease (ILD), sarcoidosis, chronic cough, and vasculitis. He has a particular focus on biologic therapies, digital health innovation, and the design of transitional care models for asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions.

Professor Mitchell is Principal Investigator (PI) on multiple international and national clinical trials and plays a key role in shaping real-world data through his involvement with the International Severe Asthma Registry (ISAR) and SHARP, a pan-European Severe Asthma Network. 

He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, co-authored a book chapter on asthma therapeutics, and contributed to international respiratory guidelines, including those from the Canadian Thoracic Society.

He is a committed medical educator and mentor, leading the Severe Asthma and COPD Clinical and Research Programme at Tallaght University Hospital and contributing extensively to medical student and postgraduate training. 

He serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Asthma Society of Ireland and is an active member of multiple international respiratory societies. He is also the Director of the Clinical Research Facility at Tallaght University Hospital."
