Prof. Shirley Potter is a Consultant in Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery at Blackrock Clinic. She holds a specialist interest in Melanoma and Skin Cancer, Head and Neck Surgery, Microvascular Surgery, and Hand Surgery. She holds a public appointment at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin. In addition, she is the Specialty Training Programme Director for Higher Surgical Training at the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and an Associate Clinical Professor at University College Dublin. She is also a skin cancer clinical lead with the National Cancer Control Programme.

Prof. Potter graduated with honours from the National University of Ireland, Galway, earning both a medical degree and a first-class intercalated Bachelor of Science in Anatomy. During her surgical training, she completed a PhD in tumor biology through the HRB Clinician Scientist Fellowship. Her specialist training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was completed at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She maintains a strong commitment to academic excellence, research, and education. 

Prof. Potter is deeply engaged in clinical and translational research, with numerous publications in the scientific literature. She is the principal supervisor for Masters and PhD students at the Conway Institute, UCD, and is the chief investigator for international surgical trials in melanoma with Cancer Trials Ireland. Her contributions to research have earned her the Clinician Research Leadership Award from the Irish Cancer Society. Additionally, she co-chairs the Irish Melanoma Forum. 

Prof. Potter completed three years of fellowship training at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Alfred University Hospital, and St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, as well as at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. These fellowships focused on Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer, Skin Oncology, Head and Neck Surgery, and Reconstructive Microsurgery.
